Being diagnosed
with diabetes is an opportunity to take charge of one’s health. Because diabetics adhere to a strict
regimen of monitoring their food intake and testing their blood sugar throughout the day, no one knows better than a diabetic
that what a person eats directly affects what goes on inside their body. Our program takes this daily regimen
a step further, so that diabetics are not merely counting carbs, but are getting all of the essential nutrients that their
bodies need for a long and healthy life.
Because diabetic children have to eat the same healthy diet as other children, they participate
in the same programs as all of the other young children and teens in our programs. The only difference
is that they are provided with important information about the glycemic index and glycemic load, to help them choose foods
that are less likely to cause blood sugar spikes.
It is our sincere hope that the diabetic children in our program learn to eat the healthiest diets
possible, so that healthy eating is “cemented” from childhood on into their adult years. If
we can accomplish this, then when the cure comes, they truly will be “free” – not only
free from finger pricks, injections, sugar spikes, and “lows”, but “free” from having to worry about
their health. Only then will they be able to eat, skip, run, and play – worry free – in the
way that children are supposed to live.
