Teenagers will learn that taking control of their own health will empower them to live long, healthy,
and fulfilling lives. Through our program, teenagers will learn how to calculate carbohydrate, protein,
and fat ratios in the foods that they create. They will also learn about the glycemic index, glycemic load, and the
importance of maintaining a pH balance in the body for optimal health. Teenagers also participate in creative cooking contests, and their food creations will be judged for both taste and nutritional
value. Teens will also learn
how eating right can help them do better in school, improve their energy levels, reduce stress, and improve their general
mood.
The teenage years can be difficult ones, as teenagers are adjusting to their
ever-growing and changing bodies, and dealing with peer pressure, the pressure to be thin, as well as the pressure of keeping
up with their school work, social network, and extracurricular activities. There is also a growing concern
about the alarming rise in childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes among the teenage population.
Our program
takes all of these things into account, and takes only a positive approach to these issues. In our program,
food is never viewed as a “foe” to be avoided, but is viewed as offering a variety of ways to eat oneself to a
healthy life. COMMUNITY
SERVICE Our teen
program heavily emphasizes community service. At each weekly session, we have our teenagers prepare "extra"
of our healthy recipes to donate to local soup kitchens. We also encourage them to donate (and to inspire others to
donate) healthy cereals, whole grains, and pastas to local food pantries.
